Hoxne Churchyard is a place of peace and tranquillity in the village, where current and former residents may have the opportunity to be laid to rest in a burial or cremated remains plot.
Many of the graves date back 200 or 300 years and give an insight into the history of the village. The churchyard is a magnet for visitors, some to attend to family graves and others just because they want to enjoy the peace or look into the history of a particular family.
A large part of the more recent area for burials is now plotted and it is hoped over the next few months to attempt to plot the older sections of the churchyard. This will be challenging as many of the headstones are badly worn so will be difficult to read, and many of the graves are unmarked. A document can be found here detailing the graves plotted and where they can be found in the churchyard, together with a plan of the churchyard which can be found here.
There are two graves managed by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, those of Private Harold Tyler and Private Alfred Patterson and a document with further information can be found here.
The churchyard is maintained by local people who offer their services, some free of charge and some for a small fee, and also by the Community Payback Scheme, which has proved invaluable over the past five months. As part of the maintainenance of the churchyard, and in accordance with churchyard regulations, would families and friends responsible for the upkeep of graves please note that any Christmas wreaths/flowers will be removed from graves at the end of January. Any flowers that have died or look unsightly will also be removed at the appropriate time, including artificial flowers that have faded or are tattered. Any flowers/ornaments placed on graves should be placed on the plinth at the foot of the headstone and not obstruct the mowers.
The churchyard is a wildlife haven, which can bring its own problems with regard to maintenance but it is important that wildlife is encouraged and managed in this beautiful space. In this regard some areas of the churchyard are being wild managed.
